Circus Graves

Circus Graves is one of the most interesting thing to see in the small town of Hugo in Oklahoma. Situated in the Southcentral region of USA, Hugo is a town in the Choctaw county that has got some importance as a tourist destination among which the most important are the circus shows by several companies in winter. As Hugo is the birthplace of some of the renowned personalities in the field of circus it was once known as the circus city of USA. Circus is an integral part of the culture of the people of Hugo and that is most clearly visible from the Circus Grave.

Located little way from the urban area of Hugo, the Circus Graves is one of its most important tourist attractions. The Circus Graves, which is also known as the 'Showmen's Rest' is actually a part of the Mt. Olivet Cemetery where you would find graves of several circus performers who have died before starting the next spring's journey. Most of the graves that you would find here are of members of Kelly Miller and Carson and Barnes as Hugo is the winter headquarter of these two companies.

Though not a wonderful place to visit and it does not offer great scenic beauty, you may visit the Circus Graves because it speaks about the respect people of Hugo has given to the circus performers for ages. All the graves that you would get to see inside the rectangular area of Circus Graves are made of granite and at the top of each stone you would find a statue of a small elephant performing upon two feet. You would also find the sentence ' A tribute to all showmen under God's Big Top' etched on every granite post.

Among all, the grave of Kelly-Miller, the founder of Miller Company is the most important and is located at the main entrance of Circus Graves. The other important graves are of elephant trainer John Carroll and ringmaster John Strong.
