Located along the coast of Arkansas River, Fort Smith Historic Site is a part of historic Fort Smith and is one of the United States National Historic Sites. Fort Smith national Historic Site was established in Fort Smith in the year 1961 for protecting the remains of the nineteenth century US military fort and the Federal Court of Western part of Arkansas. Th several exhibits that have kept in a well-protected manner inside Fort Smith would take you back to the period 1817-1871 when several historical events like Western expansion, Judge Parker and federal court's impact on Indian territory and removal of Indians took place in Arkansas.
Inside Fort Smith Historic Site you would find an interesting visitor center which is located in the old barracks or jail building. The vacant jail building and the courthouse are also important things to see here. You would get to see numerous exhibits related to the US military history. Recently Fort Smith Historic Site has gone through major renovation and a new visitor center has been established which has got several facilities like a exhibit areas, a book store, a theater and a multi-purpose classroom.
